Portugal has a large range of native grape varieties, producing a rich diversity of wines. The wide range of grape varieties contributes as significantly as the soil and climate to wine differentiation, producing distinctive wines among regions. In Portugal only some grape varieties (or Castas, in Portuguese) are authorized or endorsed in the Demarcated Regions (DOC designation).
